This palm, found in the understory of pine-oak forests in the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, was until recently considered simply a large form of Sabal minor. However, a 2011 study by Goldman et al. showed that genetic material from Sabal mexicana was introduced into a Mexican population of Sabal minor. It is not difficult to imagine that in the case of Sabal sp. 'Tamaulipas,' this is precisely what happened, perhaps many thousands of years ago, since neither parent species is present in the wild populations. Visually, the palm is quite different from Sabal minor, growing significantly larger, with a creeping trunk and bearing much larger fruit. It is said to be much faster-growing and to have similar winter hardiness to Sabal minor.
