Caryota obtusa is the largest of the fishtail palms. It is widespread across the vast area between northeast India and northern Thailand and always grows in the mountains. Its awe-inspiring size, with a smooth, gray trunk up to 20 meters tall, its astonishingly rapid growth, and its enormous, almost horizontally extending leaves, make it easily recognizable and resemble a gigantic tree fern. Because it also grows at high altitudes (up to 1000 meters in India and 1600 meters in Thailand), it tolerates cooler conditions and one to two degrees of frost. It is still rare in cultivation.
