What a rarity! This fascinating palm, virtually unknown in cultivation, is endemic to the island of Viti Levu in Fiji. The Vilaito palm is a swamp palm that typically grows in floodplains. It is a solitary palm with a light-colored trunk that can reach 12 meters in height. The palm has a dense crown with 12–15 fronds. The fronds are covered with robust leaflets and exhibit a characteristic lateral twist of up to 90°. The crownshaft is glossy dark green to black. The fruits ripen only in the lower third of the inflorescence; the rest forms striking white tassels. The fruits are large, up to 5 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter, and dull red when ripe. Germination is notoriously difficult.
