This dwarf palm occurs in Malaysia in many different forms and can be visually quite confusing. It has a pencil-thin trunk and reaches a height of about 1.20 m to 2.00 m. They form dense clumps. In adulthood, the leaves may lose their split shape and become slightly pinnate. These mottled leaves retain their color throughout life. The base color ranges from dark green to a medium yellowish green with strongly contrasting yellow spots. In the jungle, they are often found in humid areas and along streams in deep shade. Once established in cultivation, they are undemanding and grow evenly.
