A medium-sized, single-trunked palm with a distinctive, rust-brown-orange crownshaft covered in downy fibers, giving it the name "Teddy Bear Palm." The trunk can reach a circumference of about 15 cm and is distinctly ringed. The leaves are exceptionally long and almost petiole-less. It requires plenty of water and responds well to fertilizer. It thrives in bright, partially shaded locations up to full sun, but can grow long and stubby in lower light conditions. Therefore, the palm usually develops more magnificently in full sun. Light frost can cause damage, but it generally recovers without lasting harm. It appears to be extinct in its original habitat (western Madagascar).
