This palm has only been cultivated for about 20 years and is therefore still on the wish list of many palm enthusiasts. It is a wonderfully ornamental, large Madagascan species with fantastic colors and mottling, as well as the ever-striking thick, green, ringed trunk and long, arching leaves typical of many of the larger Dypsis species. It is also called the mealybug palm because of the striking, mealybug-like spots on the crownshaft and leaf stalks. However, there appear to be several contenders for the name "mealybug palm," but this was the first. Either closely related species are now also cultivated, or this palm is considerably more variable than previously thought.
