One of the larger Chamaedorea, this beautiful palm is native to rainforests in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia between sea level and 750 m (2600 ft.). It produces solitary, thin, canelike stems to 4 m (13 ft.) tall often supported by a small cone of stilt roots at the base. Its particular attraction are the huge, slightly sickle-shaped leaflets. A splendid, easy and fast growing ornamental for the understorey of the warm temperate or tropical garden that is rarely seen in cultivation.
