Likely the most cold-tolerant palm with spotted leaves; it requires indirect sunlight and prefers acidic soil. It is a dwarf palm found in the understory of subtropical forests on limestone hills in northern Vietnam and southern China. While related to *Lanonia dasyantha*, it is distinguished by its spectacularly spotted leaves. Like *L. dasyantha*, it is significantly more tolerant of cooler conditions; *Lanonia* sp. 'Hardy Mapu' actually thrives in warm-temperate climates. Information on this palm is scarce and contradictory; it is also known as *Lanonia* sp. 'Solar Eclipse'. The seeds were collected shortly after its discovery, and the germination rate has so far been below 10%...
