This particularly large and vigorously climbing palm is native to Thailand, Malaysia, and eastern Indonesia, where it grows along riverbanks, slopes, and forest edges in rainforests at elevations up to 1,500 m. The leg-thick, up to 50 m long trunk is protected by golden-brown spines, and at its end grow numerous large leaves with spiral-shaped leaflets, the underside of which is gray or white.
