While thought to be of hybrid origin, this elegant palm is however, widely cultivated under the name Ptychosperma nicolai and the seeds grow true to type. As a young plant it is almost indistinguishable from P. waitianum, apart from the new leaves being more bronze/red rather than the dark red of P. waitianum. Mature palms have irregularly arranged grouped leaflets and very thin stems.
