Caryota mitis, also known as the fishtail palm, is widespread in tropical Asia from India through Java to southern China, and is now sparsely naturalized in southern Florida and parts of Africa and South America. The species was originally described in Vietnam in 1790. Caryota mitis usually grows in multiple stems, which can reach a height of up to 10 meters and a diameter of 15 cm. The leaves can be up to 3 meters long and are bipinnate. The flowers are purple; the fruits are dark purple or red and poisonous to humans.
