A truly impressive and unique medium-sized palm. It grows in the Cuban savannas and forms a straight, gray trunk with a dense crown of stiffly upright, wedge-shaped leaves. Old leaves remain on the trunk for some time, forming a brown "dress" below the crown. This palm is best suited to the dry tropics. Although this species is not necessarily rare in Cuba, its seeds are virtually unobtainable.
