This rare and little-known species of the genus Redleaf Palm grows in rain and cloud forests in eastern and northeastern New Caledonia between 400 and 1500 m. It is a moderately large palm, up to 15 m tall, with a slender, smooth trunk and a very well-formed, compact crown of upward-facing, slightly curved, distinctly keel-shaped leaves with thick, leathery, stiff, and very evenly arranged leaf segments. A spectacular, velvety reddish-brown crownshaft is striking. It is still extremely rare in cultivation because seeds are difficult to obtain and therefore experience with its requirements is limited. It grows slowly but well in humid, cool-tropical and warm-temperate climates.
