This rare palm is native to the Seychelles, where it grows in secondary forests along streams and on rocky slopes in open woodlands. This elegant, solitary, medium-sized palm reaches a height of up to 11 meters. The crown bears dark green leaves with drooping leaflets. Young plants have spiny leaf stalks, which become less thorny with age. This palm actually has high tropical requirements and is very sensitive to cold. This contradicts the fact that this species was very frequently and successfully introduced to Europe during colonial times. It certainly thrives best in a warm, humid, and sheltered location with well-drained soil that never dries out. Young plants tolerate full sun.
