A medium-sized, slender, elegant palm growing only in three isolated locations in the montane rainforests of southwest Sri Lanka. It has a compact green crownshaft with a spreading crown of broad, slightly keeled leaves, which are an exceptionally attractive bluish-maroon color when young and are surprisingly thick and robust. Its main problem, however, is that the seeds lose their germination capacity very quickly. Although it is very attractive and easily grown in most tropical and some warm temperate climates, it is extremely rarely cultivated. It will also grow in sheltered areas of the subtropics, but it requires high humidity and seems to like plenty of moisture around the root system.
