Salacca stolonifera is rarely found in its native habitat of the hill forests of the southern part of the Thai peninsula. It is also rarely found in swampy areas and humid forests in the far south of Thailand at altitudes up to 600 m. It is a loosely growing understory palm that reaches a height of up to 4 m. The trunks are creeping to slightly erect and possess conspicuous aerial roots. The leaf bases are densely covered with a brownish, felt-like coating and adorned with slender, black spines up to 4 cm long. These spines are arranged in horizontal groups of 3–7 at the base and in pairs or singly along the petiole.
