Hyphaene coriacea is the smallest species in the genus and one of the few whose trunks split. It typically forms short, branched trunks densely covered with old leaf bases, and medium-sized crowns of long-stalked, stiff, gray-green fan-shaped leaves with widely recurved blades. The egg-sized fruits are round or pear-shaped. Their skin is edible and has a spicy flavor. The ilala palm originates from southeastern Africa and Madagascar. Like all doum palms, it is rather rare in cultivation. Due to its long roots, it requires very deep pots even as a small plant. It grows very slowly, especially in its first few years, and growing it in pots requires considerable patience.
