A very large and impressive palm from the southeastern tip of Madagascar, Dypsis malcomberi is closely related to Dypsis mananjarensis. It combines several specific characteristics that could make it an excellent ornamental plant. First, it occurs very far south at considerable altitudes, making it resistant to cooler temperatures and thus suitable not only for tropical but also subtropical and warm-temperate regions. Second, it is a beautiful, stately, fast-growing plant with a smooth, solitary trunk, large, bushy leaves, and a long, waxy crownshaft. Third, it is easily propagated from seed.
