A beautiful, relatively small-growing palm; this subspecies is native exclusively to Panama. It produces 3–6 stems reaching heights of up to approximately 3 meters. Within the genus, this species is unique due to its elliptical or slightly sigmoid leaflets. The endosperm also varies, ranging from nearly homogeneous to strongly ruminate. It is closely related to *P. decurrens* and *P. schultzeana*; all three species share the same type of inflorescence, the same type of indumentum on the rachillae, and hairy flowers.
