Rhapis micrantha is somewhat similar to R. excelsa, but differs in that its six to ten leaf segments are divided down to the petiole junction. Individual leaf segments are up to 250 mm long and 40 mm wide, are noticeably ribbed, and have pointed tips. However, the fruits, at 8–9 mm in diameter, are significantly larger than those of R. excelsa. A graceful dwarf palm, native to northwest Vietnam and Laos, where it grows in the undergrowth of humid forests on limestone hills. The loosely arranged, thin, cane-like stems rarely exceed 1 m in height and are densely covered with densely enveloping, fibrous leaf bases. A truly delightful palm for tropical and warm-temperate gardens, it also makes an excellent houseplant. Unfortunately, it is virtually unknown in cultivation.
