This little-known species from the tropical savannas of Camagüey, Cuba, is similar to C. miraguama, but has larger, less stiff leaves and broader leaf segments with slightly softer tips, giving the plant a more elegant and grand appearance. The leaves are deep dark green on the surface and silvery beneath. The slender, solitary stem can reach 6 m (20 ft) tall. C. macroglossa is very easy to cultivate and does best in a tropical or warm temperate climate, where it can even withstand occasional light frosts. Very well-drained soil is an essential requirement for successful cultivation. Like almost all Coccothrinax, it grows slowly at first but catches up once a stem has formed.
