A rather small and easy-care palm from northeastern Madagascar, where it grows along stream banks. It has a slender, solitary trunk and a compact crown of short, slightly pinnate leaves, with leaflets arranged in clusters. Dypsis rivularis grows well in a moist and slightly shaded location. It loves water, and potted plants thrive in 1 to 2 cm of water. A charming palm, it looks somewhat untidy due to the irregular arrangement of its leaflets. The name suggests that it likes to grow along rivers. Dypsis rivulatris is considered endangered, as currently only two locations are known; the total population is estimated at fewer than 100 plants.
